Summary

I started my CAS in November 2017 and here we are in May 2019 :o

The overview about my bigger project can be accessed here - http://sarcasticcasserole.blogspot.com/2019/05/the-bigger-cas-project-alternative-ib.html

Here are some examples of where the learning outcomes were achieved:

LO 1 - The first post about badminton and the post about lastekaitsepäev
LO 2 - Lastekaitsepäev
LO 3 - The bigger CAS project
LO 4 - For example the continuous volunteering at Elektriteater
LO 5 - "Some carpet help", but also significantly in the bigger CAS project
LO 6 - The Waste Management Project
LO 7 - Schoolstrike for climate

Update on climate strikes

Today, there have already been 11 climate strikes happening in Tartu (every Friday) and I believe I have attending most of them.

Another early Friday morning in front of Tartu Town Hall

As seen from the first picture, I also did a small creative project of making a protest sign. A lot of research was done and some skill of painting letters was used.

The bigger CAS project - An alternative IB DP prospectus

Here is a summary of my CAS project that I carried out from the end of april to the end of may.

Investigation - Me and my classmate discovered that there are documents called alternative prospectuses for the different colleges of the University of Oxford. These are documents that the students themselves produce with their unique knowledge of their college. We thought that my school's IB Diploma Programme could also benefit from having such a document. Thus, I decided to create a project of making our own alternative prospectus. I thought there was indeed for such a resource, as coming to the IB DP from the Estonian curriculum can be very confusing and the document could explain to the newcomers a bit about what to expect about the following two years of their lives. The document would provide the newcomers with information on how studying in the programme generally looks like and it could also potentially aid people choosing their subjects if they are torn between some choices.
I knew I could utilise my years of graphic design experience in illustrating the document. Also, formating internal assessments has been helpful in getting to know how this all works (e.g. making an interactive table of contents). I was a bit worried about how the communication would work between the different collaborators to the prospectus and that nobody would want to spare their precious pre-exam time to help with such a thing.

Preparation - It was vital to use the help of different classmates in writing the document, because I very much wanted to give information about every subject our school's DP programme offers, but I haven't taken them all. Luckily we have a class group chat where I decided to post the document. I decided to use Google Docs, which I have many experience using and is beneficial for its collaborative features so others could contribute at the moment and also new students can edit it years down the line. First, I prepared the outline of the document. I made the structure, including headings and titles. I also included some examples of text about some subjects I have taken so others could follow a similar style. I made a timeline of when it should be completed and made myself reminders to remind others about contributing the document

Action - The main portion of the project started after I posted the collaborative document to our class chat. The whole process went quite smoothly. Many people started writing right away, including myself, contributing information about the different subjects and generally the IB. After a lot of information was poured in from everyone, I began the editing phase. This was necessary to provide a somewhat similar style to the whole document. I made some basic adjustments like unifying text sizes and fixing grammar mistakes, but also some more heavy editing was needed in places that repeated themselves. For example, information about the different science subjects was often similar. After all this was done, I submitted the document to the school's IB coordinator, who expressed her gratitude about our work. (I do not wish to publish the document here, but I will happily also share it with my CAS coordinator if they wish to see it.)

RefIection - I was quite surprised how people did not seem to mind much about giving their time to contribute. It was also pleasant to see that once the collaborative phase of the project started, the project also evolved a bit to direcions I did not previously intend. For example, somebody started a CAS section, which I originally did not plan. Also, it was great to see that much self-care tips were shared, which indicated much compassion for the ones about to start the IB DP curriculum. Overall, this project ended up being surprisingly fulfilling. It felt good to make something that is hopefully of use to new IB students and I hope that the other collaborators also shared this feeling. It also showed me how teamwork can lead to much quicker and much more expansive work than I could ever have done myself and probably will make me more eager to start similarly collaborative projects in the future, as this experience has showed me that it can have many benefits despite its initial scariness. I can only hope that the resource we created can indeed be of use for someone.
